Kayla’s Story: Surprise, it’s Triplets!

By on January 3, 2025

During a recent episode of the Healthful Woman podcast hosted by Dr. Nathan Fox, an OBGYN and maternal-fetal medicine specialist based in New York City, Dr. Fox welcomes listener Kayla Laubach to share her experience of becoming a mother to triplets.

A Surprising Discovery

Kayla Laubach and her husband, Nick, were happy to find out they were expecting shortly after experiencing a miscarriage. Their excitement turned to surprise when, during a pregnancy care appointment, their doctor revealed they were not having one baby but three. Initially diagnosed with fraternal twins, it was not until a 14-week genetic test that the third baby was discovered.

With a high-risk triplet pregnancy, Kayla was transferred to a specialized maternal care practice for close monitoring. This meant biweekly ultrasounds and appointments at the hospital to ensure the safety of her babies. Adding onto her stress, this was during the COVID-19 pandemic, which added isolation to her challenging journey. She stated, “It was during COVID, so my husband was not allowed to be in the room with me.” At 24 weeks, contractions and early dilation led to a five-and-a-half-week hospital stay, during which Kayla faced gestational diabetes, magnesium treatments, and uncertainty about her babies’ health.

The Arrival of Three Miracles

On October 20, 2020, the same day as her wedding anniversary, Kayla delivered her triplets, Anthony, Grayson, and Parker, via C-section at 29 weeks and 4 days. Though the boys required NICU care, Kayla experienced what she described as a relatively uneventful journey for premature infants. The NICU staff closely monitored Each child’s development and helped educate Kayla and Nick on caring for three newborns at home.

Bringing the Boys Home

All three boys were home by Christmas morning, creating profound joy and fulfillment for Kayla and Nick. While those first weeks were exhausting, the structured schedule established by the NICU nurses helped the couple adapt to their new life. Kayla reflected on how the experience strengthened her bond with her children and displayed the importance of her support network, including her family and friends who rallied around her during this time.

Reflections and Advice for Other Parents

Now raising three vibrant toddlers, Kayla reflects on her journey with pride and gratitude. She acknowledged the fear and guilt she initially felt but reassured others that these emotions are normal when faced with unexpected challenges. Her advice to parents navigating high-risk pregnancies is to embrace the support of their loved ones, trust their resilience, and find joy in the small, miraculous moments that come with parenthood.
