We are pleased to announce the introduction of nitrous oxide for use during select GYN office procedures and exams at MFMA. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” has a longstanding record of safe use in medical settings such as childbirth and dentistry. Recognizing the challenges some patients may face during gynecologic procedures and exams, we believe that nitrous oxide can offer significant benefits.
How Nitrous Oxide Works
Nitrous oxide is an odorless gas administered through inhalation, aiding in relaxation and dissociation. Its effects are rapid, typically taking effect within minutes, and it is entirely patient-controlled—allowing individuals to discontinue use if they find the sensation uncomfortable. Moreover, the effects wear off swiftly, resulting in minimal downtime following its use. While it does not induce full sedation like intravenous anesthesia, many patients report feeling relaxed and more comfortable during procedures. It’s important to note that temporary side effects such as dizziness or rare instances of increased panic may occur but usually improve quickly upon discontinuation of the gas.
Available Procedures
At MFMA, nitrous oxide is available for use during various gynecologic procedures, including IUD insertion and colposcopy. Additionally, it can enhance the experience of pelvic exams for any patient who believes it will benefit them. However, nitrous oxide may not be suitable for women taking specific medications or with certain health conditions. We encourage patients to consult with their doctor regarding their medical history to determine if nitrous oxide is an appropriate option for them. Please be aware that nitrous oxide is not covered by commercial insurance, and the current fee for its use is $100 per procedure.
Our Commitment to Patient Comfort
Our team of doctors at MFMA is excited to offer this option to our patients, aiming to enhance comfort and ease during gynecologic procedures and exams.
