What is Xeomin?
Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator designed to temporarily relax facial muscles, reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Like Botox, it contains botulinum toxin type A, but it is formulated without accessory proteins, making it a “naked” toxin. For some, this may reduce the risk of developing resistance over time.
Xeomin is most commonly used to treat the following areas:
- Frown lines (glabellar lines)
- Forehead wrinkles
- Crow’s feet
- Bunny lines
- Lip lines
- Chin dimples
- Neck bands
How Does Xeomin Work?
Xeomin works by temporarily relaxing targeted muscles to smooth out moderate to severe upper facial lines. It contains botulinum toxin type A, which blocks nerve signals that tell muscles to contract. As the muscles relax, the overlying skin becomes smoother, reducing signs of aging. Effects typically appear within 3-4 days, with full results seen about 7-10 days after injection. Xeomin results typically last 3-4 months, after which the muscle function will gradually return, and wrinkles may reappear.
Who is a Candidate?
Xeomin is ideal for individuals looking to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. You may be a good candidate if you have moderate to severe lines or wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movement, are in overall good health, and are not pregnant or nursing. Those with a history of allergic reactions to other botulinum toxin products or with an active skin infection at the injection site may not be ideal candidates. Your Xeomin Consultation
A consultation is essential to ensure Xeomin is the right treatment for you and to customize the injection plan based on your facial anatomy and goals. It also helps you understand what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. During this meeting, you will discuss your medical history, aesthetic concerns, and desired goals for your Xeomin treatment. It is also a great time to tell your doctor about any medical conditions that may affect your treatment. For example, any diseases that affect your muscles or nerves, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease), myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton Syndrome. We will work with you to determine if Xeomin is the right fit for you to achieve your anti-aging goals.
The Xeomin Treatment
A Xeomin treatment is quick, minimally invasive, and typically takes 10-15 minutes. To begin, the treatment area will be cleansed, and the injection points mapped out. Xeomin will be injected using a fine needle into targeted muscles. You may experience a slight pinch or mild pressure during injection, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated.
Recovery and Results
Following injection, mild redness or swelling at the injection site may occur but should subside within a few hours. There is no downtime required following Xeomin injections, so patients can feel free to resume most activities right away. However, you should avoid rubbing the treated area, doing strenuous exercise, or consuming alcohol for 12- 24 hours after treatment for best results.
