Katie Yin’s Pregnancy Story After a Stillbirth
In this episode of the Healthful Woman podcast, Dr. Nathan Fox speaks with Katie Yin about her pregnancy after experiencing a full-term stillbirth. In part two of her birth story, Katie shares her thoughts and fears during her second pregnancy, highlighting the emotional and mental challenges that follow such a traumatic event.
Katie’s Story
Katie’s second pregnancy was affected by her previous loss, leaving her anxious about another stillbirth. Frequent doctor visits, therapy, and support groups helped Katie manage her fears, but the trauma of her first loss lingered throughout her pregnancy. Katie reflects on her experience with Dr. Fox, stating, “So you sort of reflected that this was the loss of a child, that having a new pregnancy, and another child wasn’t like replacing that child we had just lost.” Finding the right doctor who understood her history and case helped her feel supported throughout her pregnancy.
Even with a healthy pregnancy, she found it difficult to believe everything would turn out well. Katie’s therapy and medication played a crucial role in getting her through the tough months leading up to the birth of her son, Kai.
Understanding Pregnancy After Stillbirth
Pregnancy after a stillbirth can be an emotionally challenging experience for expecting parents. While the desire to have another baby is strong, the trauma of a previous loss may be carried through the new pregnancy. Many parents experience fear, anxiety, guilt, and doubt throughout their next pregnancy. There are many resources available for those experiencing pregnancy after stillbirth:
Emotional and Mental Health Support
Caring for your mental health during pregnancy after stillbirth is just as important as physical health. Anxiety and fear are normal responses, but left unchecked, they can become overwhelming. Many parents find relief through therapy, support groups, and, if necessary, medication. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other approaches can help manage the day-to-day emotional toll, while support groups provide a sense of community and understanding.
Medical Monitoring and Reassurance
More frequent monitoring is often recommended for pregnancies after stillbirth. Many expectant parents find reassurance in frequent ultrasounds, fetal heart monitoring, and check-ups with maternal-fetal medicine specialists. These visits can help address any concerns early and offer comfort during moments of uncertainty.
